India as we all know being a developing country, some calling it 'third' world should have services and goods at a cheaper price. You could not be more wrong. A live example in front of you being the new 3G iPhone.
The 3G iPhone will be priced at 31,000 rupees, a whopping $750 for the 8GB version. The 16 GB one will sell for Rs. 36,100 that is about $850. These prices are simply too high we believe for the iPhone to be a success in India. The phone will definitely make good sales in the first couple of weeks to the cream of the crowd, but this is simply fizzle out sooner than you can think.
To add more misery, 3G services are not even offered in India at the moment and will not be so till late 2009. The user will just be paying for the design and looks of the iPhone and nothing more!

Except for the two telecom giats, we can be absolutely sure no one has the slightest idea on what the iPhone is going to cost (officially) in India. We know the old (2G) iPhone has been selling unclocked in the gray market for a price of Rs. 18000-21000 depending on where you get it from.
The 3G iPhone which has been launched in the USA and which is soon going to be launched all around the world comes to the consumer at a subsidized price with a 18month - 24month contract. Can the same technique be used to market the phone in India ? We don't think so. Reason being that the cost for making calls, and sending text messages along with GPRS and EDGE facility is really low, probably the lowest in the world. In the USA the mobile phone users are even charged on incoming calls which is not the case in India.
It is not possible for the telecom companies to subsidize the handset in India due to low profit margins. Our gestimation is that the iPhone will be priced close to Rs. 30,000 for the 8GB model. This is only our guess and not to be taken as a word!
We shall know on the 22nd of August what the details are. If anyone is aware of the pricing, you can leave your comment below and spread the word. |

The Apple iPhone 3G is finally all set to debut in India on the August 22nd 2008. The GSM providers Bharti Airtel and Vodafone are the first telecom majors to launch it in the country.
The speciality of the phone being the subsidized price in USA and other countries may not be realised in India though. There is word that the handset will be priced at around Rs. 20,000.
The Indian telecom companies will not be able to subsidize the cost of the handset since they are unable to charge the users hefty call charges for usage.
The call charges for usage in the USA on plans with the subsidized phone go as high as 25cents a minute. The per minute charge incurred by the user in India is not even 1/10th of that. |

T-Mobile Germany has made the bold move to up sales of the Apple iPhone by slashing the price of the phone to a low of 99 euros, yes 99 Euros only.
The Phone had been introduced at first with a price tag of 299 Euros, but will now be available for under 100. This incidently is the same price as what you would pay for an 'ordinary' Nokia 6300.
The sad part about the contract (2 year deal) which the customer has to sign is that it will be the highest level plan. The tariff plan is 89 euros per month as a minimum monthly commitment, which is very high for most users.
On the other hand there is no stopping people who would take the deal up online and then unlock the phone with the ever famous Pwnage software. |

"Let me repeat what I said: I think that you're going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough." said the AT&T boss. Is that clear enough for you ? I think we are pretty clear now! Thats right, we could very well see the 3G iPhone come out before the summer gets over. Atleast thats what we feel here at TechNews going by the pattern of Apple's releases. Also another study which was done shows that "most" iPhone users are existing Apple customers. This according to them shows that the iPhone has not been able to get a new customer base. We don’t pay too much attention to this since the iPhone is a totally new product from Apple and it will do no harm to its other offerings.
Another argument we refuse to buy is that the iPhone will eat up BlackBerry users, which is definitely not on! BlackBerry is one of the top services+phones out there, and is unbeatable at the moment.
