Except for the two telecom giats, we can be absolutely sure no one has the slightest idea on what the iPhone is going to cost (officially) in India. We know the old (2G) iPhone has been selling unclocked in the gray market for a price of Rs. 18000-21000 depending on where you get it from. The 3G iPhone which has been launched in the USA and which is soon going to be launched all around the world comes to the consumer at a subsidized price with a 18month - 24month contract. Can the same technique be used to market the phone in India ? We don't think so. Reason being that the cost for making calls, and sending text messages along with GPRS and EDGE facility is really low, probably the lowest in the world. In the USA the mobile phone users are even charged on incoming calls which is not the case in India. It is not possible for the telecom companies to subsidize the handset in India due to low profit margins. Our gestimation is that the iPhone will be priced close to Rs. 30,000 for the 8GB model. This is only our guess and not to be taken as a word! We shall know on the 22nd of August what the details are. If anyone is aware of the pricing, you can leave your comment below and spread the word. |
