The Taxi unions, Maruti and the Government are all on the drawing board in an effort to modernize the Taxis in Mumbai. The current Black and Yellow Fiat taxis are on the verge of being taken off the road as early as 2008. The three major Taxi unions in Mumbai have started talks with Maruti on getting this done as soon as possible.
Currently there are an estimated 55,000 - 60,000 black and yellow taxis in mumbai which could be replaced with the Wagon R. The taxi drivers also claim that it will be possible to run Air-conditioned taxis at the same price of the non-AC taxis today with the Wagon R.
Further there are also plans to install Radio connectivity and GPS in the new taxis for better communication.
